Automation systems for ten rainwater tanks in Madrid (Spain)

Ayuntamiento de Madrid

Obszary aktywności: Systemy automatyki i sterowania, Systemy informatyczne

Sektory działalności: Zbiorniki na wody opadowe

To meet the objectives set out in the the Hydrological Plan for the Tagus Basin, Madrid City Council established a set of actions to be carried out in its sewer system. The main purpose of these infrastructures is to regulate flows to sewage treatment plants and avoid any pollutant spillage into the river.

The geographical scopes of action corresponded to the zone of reconstruction of the M-30 running parallel to the River Manzanares and the zones to the north and south of it.

Madrid City Council has built five large tanks, all automated by Adasa:
• La China rainwater tank (120,000 m3). Main contractor: Acciona
• Abroñigales rainwater tank (200,000 m3). Main contractor: Sacyr
• Valdemarín rainwater tank (30,000 m3). Main contractor: Construcciones Ortiz
• Arroyofresno rainwater tank (400,000 m3). Main contractor: UTE Dragados Drace
• Butarque rainwater tank (400,000 m3). Main contractor: FCC

The network also includes other small tanks, of which Adasa carried out automation of five belonging to the right-bank zone of Río Manzanares southern zone (executed by Acciona): Right-Bank Interceptor and these tanks: González Feito, Pradolongo in San Martín de la Vega and La Oliva.

Adasa carried out the low-tension electrical installations and automation systems:
- Cleaning systems using flappers
- The filling and emptying systems required to regulate water intake and discharge according to the overall needs of the system
- Pumping systems to empty the tank
- Safety instrumentation for gas detection
- Ventilation systems, consisting of ventilators and extractors
- Lighting system
- A control centre, consisting of a SCADA for work supervision, in some cases completed by a mathematical model in order to optimize system operation and the capacity of the associated drains.

The system is fully open and ready for communication in the future with a control centre where the data from all the tanks will be centralized.
