Tajo-Segura inter-basin water transfer system (Spain)

Ministerio de Agricultura, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente. Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura.

Areas of Activity: Hydrology, Automation and Control Systems

Sectors of Operation: Freshwaters, Irrigation Modernisation

Along its 292 km long, the irrigation canal of the inter-basin water transfer system provides water to 61 irrigation communities from Murcia, Alicante, Albacete and Almería provinces. Since 1981 the channel has supplied more than 80,000 irrigators in an area of 147,225 hectares, with a volume of water transferred of 11,426 Hm3.

The main goal of this project is the automation and remote control of the gates and the acquisition of flow and volume contribution data of irrigation communities; integrating all this information in the control centre of the Segura River Basin Authority and 7 additional sub control centres.

GENERAL GOALS:

· Telemetry of the floodgates of the inter-basin water transfer system.
· Control of the hydraulic balance of the reservoirs and lakes directly involved in regulating the inter-basin flow, both in normal water usage circumstances and for forecasting floods in extreme situations.

The project includes the infrastructures, the electromechanical elements and computer systems and communications required to achieve telemetering of the intakes and sluices of the inter-basin canals, remote controls for the main sluices, and control of the hydraulic balance of the reservoirs and lakes directly involved in regulating the inter-basin flow, whether in normal water usage circumstances or for forecasting floods in extreme situations.
